E18 Sky − Langangen

The project "E18 Sky – Langangen" is a new 11–kilometre long four–lane highway that includes four double tunnels, six highway bridges, two crossing bridges, five roundabouts, 16 tunnel portals and the upgrading of the existing E18 highway and local roads. The project was initiated in 2009 and will be completed in 2012.

The market outlook for major infrastructure projects within road and rail are good. Contract size and complexity is steadily increasing, and with it comes increased demands for expertise, breadth of product offering and capacity. Veidekke, along with its partner Hæhre Entreprenør, has the complete contract for the Sky – Langangen project.

The route is located in hilly terrain alternating between wet hollows and rock ridges. The major hollows will have crossing bridges between the ridges, where the longest bridge is 305 meters at 60 meters above ground. Concrete techniques, including formwork and reinforcement, are therefore essential. The bridge pillars are 5.5 x 2.5 meters at the oval cross section. Improvements to the casting process were achieved through altered concrete recipes and use of a new type of steel mould that allows for easier release. The distance from the first abutment to the first set of bridge pillars is 66 meters and the superstructure was cast using a specially designed 45–tonne truss.

Another important area of expertise is tunnelling and earthmoving, with hard rock, complex logistics and important safety and environmental considerations as key factors.

The overall quality and value creation of a project increases through close interaction between all parties. In the Sky – Langangen project about 350 people from Veidekke, Hæhre and subcontractors – in addition to consultants, suppliers, governmental bodies and others were involved in the planning, design and execution of the project. Everyone entered into a participative planning process and structured project execution with clear common goals, continuous dialogue and effective cooperation.

In 2010, Veidekke was involved in nearly 1000 different projects. The experience we gain on one project benefits others. Here are some of the projects from 2010 from which we have gleaned learning and impulses valuable for the effective execution of the Sky Langangen project.

Veitraseen ligger i kupert terreng vekslende mellom våte dalsøkk og hard berggrunn. De store dalsøkkene får kryssende bruer over høydedragene, der den lengste brua er 305 meter og går 60 meter over bakken. Betongteknikk, inkludert forskaling og armering, står derfor sentralt. Forbedringer i støpeprosessen ble oppnådd gjennom justerte betongresepter og bruk av en ny type støpeformer av stål som slipper lettere. Avstanden fra brokar til første søylepar er 66 meter, og overbygningen er støpt ved hjelp av et 45 tonn tungt spesialkonstruert fagverk.
