ON-SITE LEARNING

School-on-Site

Recruiting enough skilled workers, especially in the technical areas of formwork, reinforcement and concrete, the building and construction industry has had difficulty. For this reason, in the early nineties, Veidekke established the project "Veidekkeskolen", an on-site school. The project's target audience is workers aged 19-40 who are in danger of falling outside the traditional labour market. It offers vocational training through theoretical and practical training on a specific project, creating a valuable win-win situation: Students tired of school are newly motivated to work, the industry gains access to important skills, and society saves a potentially large amount of unemployment or other social benefits. Today, the project is a collaboration between labour market authorities (NAV), Veidekke, the industry organisation Norwegian Contractor's Association for Building and Construction (EBA), and the Oslo Institute of Education. Over the past twelve years, we have trained over one hundred skilled workers who have since started as interns in different businesses in the building and construction industry. In addition to the regular curriculum in VG1 and VG2, students have access to important courses such as: Introduction to HSE on construction sites, the Safe operation of work equipment, and Scaffolding user training. In 2009, 20 students began concrete studies at the Nydalen School building project. Students are recruited through NAV, which also funds the project.
